STORYLINE

“Gangnam Zombie” is a 2023 South Korean comedy-horror movie that blends slapstick humour and a zombie apocalypse. The action of the film takes place in the crowded neighbourhood of Gangnam in Seoul, where an unanticipated virus epidemic transforms regular people into flesh-eating zombies.

The protagonist of the narrative is Park Chang-sik (Ryu Jun-yeol), a shy and underachieving young man who works at a convenience shop in Gangnam. A weird green gas is accidently discharged into the atmosphere one fateful night, disrupting Chang-sik’s routine and causing a dangerous virus to spread quickly.

Chaos spreads throughout the neighbourhood as people become zombies after contracting the virus. As survivors attempt to flee the zombies’ grasp, Gangnam’s streets become a battlefield. Chang-sik is stuck inside his convenience shop with a few other survivors throughout the panic and horror, including Jung Min-joo (played by Park So-dam), a spirited and resourceful young woman who ends up being Chang-sik’s unusual ally.

When Chang-sik realises that he has somehow developed an immunity to the virus and the zombies do not attack him, the scenario takes a humorous turn. Chang-sik’s fearful character overrides his gratitude for this immunity, and he starts to fear the zombies instead of being appreciative of it. He scrambles to find a way out of the shop so he can make it through the night.

The two survivors come into a variety of strange and humorous scenarios as they forage for supplies and try to come up with an escape strategy. Slapstick humour and situational comedy are used throughout the movie as Chang-sik and Min-joo get themselves into absurd situations while attempting to outwit the zombies.

A conceited star, a clueless mobster, and a health-obsessed fitness teacher are among a group of colourful and unusual Gangnam locals who also find themselves stranded in various parts of the neighbourhood. The movie amusingly depicts how these various characters respond to the zombie epidemic and make their own eccentric attempts to survive.

The survivors have to learn to rely on one another and face their fears as the night goes on. Chang-sik has substantial character growth, changing from a timid and self-centered person to a courageous and kind hero. As she develops a bond with Chang-sik, Min-joo’s hard demeanour also starts to soften.

“Gangnam Zombie” addresses themes of cooperation, bravery, and the value of teamwork among the laughter and comical situations. The movie deftly employs humour to illustrate how resilient people can be, even in the midst of horrific crises.

The survivors have numerous close encounters with zombies throughout the film, which alternates between hilarious antics and heart-pounding scenes. The odd cast of characters teams up to fight the zombie horde and find a way out of Gangnam in the movie’s action-packed and humorous showdown.
